Some 3D FAQ's -
3D typically requires the viewer to wear glasses
- the purpose of which is to isolate the images for each eye - such
the the left eye sees only left eye images, and the right eye only
sees right eye images.
There are at least 4 main methods for delivering 3D to
theaters -
Polarization - used by Real D and IMAX
Color offset - used by Dolby; comparable in quality to
polarization
Shutter frame - not common for theatrical
Anaglyph - using the red and blue glasses of yesteryear;
a "gimmicky" look at best
Theater owners and studios love digital 3D - with
titles showing nearly 3x higher revenue in 3D theaters than in
regular (2D) theaters.
New technology can allow home delivery of 3D to new
3D-capable HDTV's, such as from Samsung who boasts over a
million such sets already. Soon there will also be Blu-ray
titles released in 3D. Plus there are autostereoscopic 3D
cell phones, including a snap-on screen for the iPhone.
